Fisicoquímica francesa nacida en Polonia. Estudió en la Sorbona (desde 1891). Buscando en otra sustancia la presencia de radiactividad, que Henri Becquerel acababa de descubrir en el uranio, la encontró en el torio. En 1895 se casó con su colega el físico Pierre Curie (n. 1859–m. 1906). Juntos descubrieron los elementos polonio y radio, y lograron distinguir las radiaciones alfa, beta y gamma. Por su trabajo en la radiactividad (un término que ella acuñó), en 1903, los Curie compartieron el Premio Nobel de Física con Becquerel. Después de la muerte de Pierre, Marie fue nombrada en su misma cátedra y se convirtió en la primera mujer en enseñar en la Sorbona. En 1911 obtuvo el Premio Nobel en Química por descubrir el polonio y aislar radio puro, siendo así la primera persona en obtener dos premios Nobel. Murió de leucemia causada por su larga exposición a la radiactividad. En 1995 se convirtió en la primera mujer cuyos propios logros le merecieron el honor de que sus cenizas tuvieran su relicario en el Panteón de París. See also Frédéric Joliot-Curie.
